Students learn to "Jimmer" at Basketball Send-Off

If you have been following basketball at all this season, you don’t need me to tell you that it has been madness! If you are a diehard fan, like me, then you most likely attended the BYU Men and Women’s Team Basketball send-off on March 8th. For those of you who didn’t, let me fill you in.

When I walked into the Marriott Center, the people in the stands were already cheering and chatting excitedly even before a single player was seen. The BYU cheerleaders and Cougarettes were dancing on the Marriott Center floor and, by the time T.J. Fredette started the event by rapping about BYU’s amazing stats, no one needed to tell the crowd to get on their feet.

If you were lucky, you went home with a T-shirt thrown into the stands by one of the members of the men or women’s teams. However, if you were not one of the lucky ones, there was plenty to be excited about when the Super Fan competition began. Performances like “Teach Me How to Jimmer” and, Super Fans of over 20 years, Trent and Cookie’s displaying of BYU stats were just some of the fun and exuberant team spirit activities in which students participated at this event. But enough with the festivities; when it came down to it, these fans were there because they were proud of their basketball teams. After all, if your college had two Coach of the Year awards, only three losses between BOTH teams, and a Player of the Year award (going to none other than Jimmer Fredette) wouldn’t you want to come out and give your teams a real send-off before they face grueling tournament play in Las Vegas?

Old and young, BYU student or not, everyone joined in the fun in wishing good luck to both BYU’s men and women’s basketball teams.
